Ransomware
A virus that locks your files by encrypting them, then demands a ransom to give them back.
Ransomware makes your files inaccessible and demands a payment in exchange for the key to unlock them. Often, the data is also stolen, with a threat to release it if you do not pay. Paying is not advised because nothing is guaranteed; the best protection remains offline backups, tested regularly.
