Rootkit
Malicious software that takes deep control of a machine while making itself invisible.
A rootkit seeks to obtain elevated, lasting control over a system, while hiding its own presence and that of other viruses. It can lodge itself very deep in the machine, which makes it hard to detect and to remove with the usual tools. Its presence is so serious that fully reinstalling the machine is sometimes the only safe solution.
