Malware
A general term for any software designed to do harm: virus, worm, Trojan horse, ransomware, spyware and so on.
Malware (malicious software) is a program made to cause harm: steal data, encrypt files, spy, take control of a machine. The word covers very different families depending on their purpose. No single protection is enough: you combine prevention, detection and the ability to respond.
